Hidden in supply chains to avoid detection
When it comes to disguising their crimes and preserving profits, traffickers are highly sophisticated. They know global supply chains offer the best cover for masking the
illegal forced labour that keeps them in business. And because traffickers are adroit at hiding their practices, businesses can be
completely unaware that their supply chains, partnerships and operations are exposed to such crimes.
Nevertheless, as the UN’s Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights make clear, “the responsibility to respect human rights is a global standard of expected
conduct for all business enterprises wherever they operate”. As such, conducting due diligence to mitigate and prevent exposure to trafficking, is a vital part of corporate
Environmental, Social and Governance considerations.
Due diligence to identify, assess and mitigate risks
Step Up’s veteran Anti Money Laundering (AML) and compliance experts provide businesses and financial institutions with risk assessment, supply- chain audits and bespoke strategies, processes and procedures, to mitigate the risk of exposure to modern slavery.
‘Following the money’ to expose trafficking
Step Up has been instrumental in bringing OSCE’s ‘Follow the Money: Compendium of Resources and Step by Step Guide to Financial Investigations to Trafficking in Human
Beings’ pilot project to Cyprus.
This provides a framework for financial intelligence units, financial institutions and law enforcers to identify and analyse suspicious transaction reports by assessing human-
trafficking indicators. This, in turn, enhances financial intelligence data for use in criminal trials, to increase prosecutions of traffickers.
As part of the Guide’s long-term implementation, Step Up has facilitated its translation into Greek, and offers training to banking and finance professionals in AML Human
Trafficking Compliance.
Training for survivor-aligned practices
Our team also provides training to ensure labour practices remain transparent and trafficking-aware, while keeping the survivor experience at the forefront.
